What is Gum Disease?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection of the gums that can cause inflammation, bleeding, and tenderness. This infection can eventually spread to the structures of the tooth itself, causing damage to the roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its advanced stages, gum disease can result in loose teeth and the need for an extraction. However, it\u2019s important to know that gum disease is not confined to the affected teeth themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will Tooth Extraction Cure Gum Disease?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gum disease is primarily caused by the accumulation of bacteria from dental plaque. These harmful bacteria can affect the entire oral environment, not just the areas surrounding the affected teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When teeth are extracted due to advanced gum disease, the bacteria responsible for the condition can still persist in the remaining gum tissue and other parts of the mouth. This means that extracting a tooth is not a \u201ccure\u201d but could be a necessary step to begin treating the infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Happens After Extraction?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your dentist will first want the extraction site to clot and then heal on its own before additional measures are taken, they may prescribe antibacterial mouthwash or antibiotics to assist with the healing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, it will be a battle with you and your dentist on one side and the gum disease on the other going forward. You\u2019ll need to maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing and flossing daily and continue to see your dentist for periodontal treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
